As the Christmas and New Year period draws to a close, the recruitment cycle enters one of the busiest times of the year. I hope everyone found the time during the Christmas holidays to research and apply to the schemes and programmes they wanted, but if not, fear not, because there is still time to make those applications. Make sure you refer to our Firm Directory for the information, links, and Trainee Profiles that can take you to the next stage of your research.

As a reminder that there is still time to apply, here follows a statement from Freshfields:

"Apply for a summer vacation scheme with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer by 9 January 2012

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is one of a handful of leading international law firms, with offices across the world. Our clients are mainly big commercial businesses whose names are well-known. Our practice is very diverse, and constantly changing to meet our clients' evolving needs.

Our summer vacation scheme will give you a good idea of what life is like as an international commercial lawyer, and what life would be like at Freshfields. It's fun as well as hard work. But we make sure you hear enough, do enough, and meet enough of us to decide if you'd like to join us as a trainee solicitor. You'll join one of our eight practice groups and we'll allocate a qualified lawyer to look after you.

The scheme takes place in our London office. But some will also spend a third week in one of our overseas offices. In 2011, students visited Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Madrid, New York and Washington DC. This extra week gives you a great insight into how international our work is and how we work together on cross-border deals.

To apply for a 2012 summer vacation scheme you will need to apply online by 9 January 2012. Visit www.freshfields.com/uktrainees to find out more. "

On a different note, make sure you keep an eye on this website and the Facebook page for some exciting news regarding Membership Cards!

The King’s College London Law Fair has ended, and I hope everyone was able to speak to the firms they wanted! Remember, if you require any more information, please look at our Firm Directory, which includes information, deadlines, Trainee Profiles and more for a variety of firms.

Also, it is just four days until the King’s College London Law Society Christmas Party sponsored by Field Fisher Waterhouse! Held at the exclusive (and I mean exclusive) Mayfair venue Whisky Mist (frequented by the likes of Rihanna, Beyoncé and David Beckham), at the fantastic price of just £15 for members and £18 for those who are not members just yet. This is not just a discount on the regular entry price, but it also includes three free drinks, so you can start the party in style. Remember, it’s a James Bond themed event, so a perfect opportunity to dress up and experience the high life with your peers! Read more on our Facebook event here.

To all who attended the GLS presentation in October, and to those who are interested in a career with the Government Legal Service, follow the link below and register your details to receive further information about Vacation Schemes, Training Contracts and Pupillage opportunities with the Government Legal Service, that will give you the chance to learn about the work of a Government Lawyer. This will be of particular interest to students looking to pursue a hands-on legal career effecting social interests, as an alternative to a commercial legal career in a City Law Firm.
