Dear Students,
First off, I would like to warmly extend my many congratulations on being accepted into the prominent institution which is King’s College London.
The KCL Law Society receives much financial backing from corporations. Thus, sponsorship from law firms is a precious resource. Obtaining this is the President’s job, and seeing this spent in an efficient and responsible way is the Treasurer’s. As Treasurer, it is my job to ensure, through careful financial planning, that the sponsorship received is spent appropriately and its use is optimised throughout the year. I also aim to ensure that the membership money from you is put to its full use, so that you can benefit from your investment to its full potential – since joining the Law Society is your investment in your future career. I’m involved in funding the many top-quality events within the society, mainly trying to ensure that there is no wasted expenditure and that we can maintain the running of the society on sufficient resources.
Balancing work and play is seen by many as a difficult task. I happen to disagree with this view – I am determined that attendance at Law Society social events should be a chance to let off steam as well as an opportunity to network. My underlying rationale for this would be the maxim, “Work hard, play hard.” Remember, everyone on the KCLLS Committee was in your position once; we were all talented, bright but invariably inexperienced first-year law students.
The Committee for 2011-12 hopes to cement the KCL Law Society’s reputation as an invaluable source of information and advice for students, as well as inspire and stimulate the minds of members to further themselves academically and socially.
A British-born Chinese and a Londoner through-and-through, I look forward to seeing you all in the coming year, both on-campus and at future Law Society events! Studying in London is not only a great opportunity for your academic and future job prospects, but a perfect opportunity to become acquainted with the vibrant and exciting capital which is the city. My top tip is not to stress in the law course; there is nothing to fear except not enjoying your university experience.
