Jones Day global law firm invites you to their stand at the Kings Law Fair on 29 November Firm Profile Jones Day is among the world’s largest law firms (2,500 lawyers in 35 offices). Pro Bono Jones Day is proud of its long tradition of pro bono work. Through its various pro bono projects, the Firm ensures that lawyers who are willing have the opportunity to become involved in helping those less able to help themselves. London-based projects include the Waterloo Legal Advice Service, which the Firm has supported for many years. London is also deeply involved with LawWorks, through which Jones Day lawyers have been introduced to and assisted a large number of not-for-profit organisations. Placements On our placement schemes, you'll be given real work to do, not just seminars, presentations and group exercises. You'll be encouraged to introduce yourself to lawyers at the firm with a view to assisting them in their work and experiencing the kinds of work you think you might enjoy. Tom Hodge, Trainee Solicitor, King's LL.B. alumni During the summer of my second year at King's I was lucky enough to be able to attend three vacation schemes, one of which was with Jones Day. All three vacation schemes were with major international law firms that have an impressive array of blue chip clients but when it came time to decide which training contract offer to accept I chose Jones Day without hesitation. So what makes Jones Day different from the other international law firms you may be thinking about applying to? What I picked up on during my vacation scheme, and has been reinforced since beginning my training contract, are two key factors that make Jones Day unique: the people; and the structure of the training contract. At every major law firm in London you will meet talented and driven people, but only at Jones Day will all the lawyers you work with be so refreshingly down-to-earth. From my very first day as a trainee (and even as a vacation scheme student) I was made to feel part of the firm, the people are approachable and everyone genuinely is working together. Jones Day really is a collaborative environment where you have the opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility quickly, which may sound daunting but I have never felt out of my depth because there is always support in place and someone to talk to if you need advice. Thanks to the friendly atmosphere socialising at the firm is great, whether that be a post-work drink on a Friday or attending one of the many events organised by the firm. For me what really showed how much Jones Day values its inclusive culture was the trip to Washington arranged by the firm. Every year all the new entry-level lawyers, from all 37 offices globally, are sent to Washington to participate in a "New Lawyer Academy" where you get to learn more about the firm, and there are obviously plenty of opportunities to enjoy yourself in the evenings as well. The trip to Washington is just one way that the Jones Day training contract is unique. As you may already know Jones Day has a non-rotational training system; there are no "seats", all trainees are given their own office and go and find work from associates and partners. This sounds difficult but after you have knocked on a few doors and realise how welcoming people are your nerves evaporate. The system allows you to very quickly pick up work in a number of different areas. Since starting in September I have worked predominantly for the competition and litigation departments, and I've also assisted lawyers in corporate, banking, and business restructuring and reorganisation. I have had the opportunity to attend hearings at the High Court, go to client meetings, and draft the documents for a multi-billion dollar bank loan, and I haven't even been at the firm for six months. This is what makes the Jones Day training contract special, the opportunity to take on as much work and responsibility as you feel confident with. You get to determine the course of your own career right from the start.
